Residential inpatient treatment temporarily removes you from everyday life triggers and routines so that you can rebuild your life in a safe, sober, therapeutic community setting. SOBA NJ offers both short and long-term residential inpatient treatment options.

Short-term residential treatment involves a standard treatment stay of 30-90 days. During that time, you’ll eat, sleep, and live on-site while engaging in groups, individual therapy, and other activities during the day. This is an ideal starting point for many clients. 

Depending on your treatment needs, long-term residential treatment can last for six months or more. Clients who experience frequent relapse or who are working to overcome severe addiction often benefit from a long-term residential stay, even if standard addiction treatment has been unsuccessful in the past.

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a type of addiction treatment in between residential inpatient services and traditional outpatient programs. As a PHP client, you will get to live off-site or in sober living but will commute to your addiction treatment center for an intensive treatment schedule during the day, most days per week.

PHP is often recommended as an initial treatment option for those who live in a stable, substance-free 

environment and need comprehensive treatment but don’t require full hospitalization. It can also be used for those transitioning out of inpatient care who need structured support as they re-enter daily life.

An intensive outpatient program (IOP) offers addiction treatment one step below PHP in intensity. Like PHP, it can be used as an initial form of treatment or a step-down from a higher level of support, such as residential inpatient or PHP. However, IOP is more flexible than PHP, consisting of fewer total treatment hours per week. 

The lower time commitment required in IOP makes it an ideal fit for those who need to work, go to school, or fulfill similar obligations while in treatment. You will still engage in individual therapy, regular groups, and other treatment services.

Outpatient programs provide the most flexibility out of any form of addiction treatment. Unlike in IOP, our outpatient programs consist of as few as nine treatment hours per week to start, usually spread across the course of three days per week. By the end of outpatient treatment, you could be in care for as little as one hour per week. 

Outpatient helps you maintain sobriety while fully involved in your everyday life. It’s ideal for clients who feel like they have reached a more stable place but are hoping to gain relapse prevention skills. Most often, but not always, outpatient is used as a step-down form of care.
