What Is Medical Detox?

When you become addicted to alcohol or drugs, your body becomes used to having the substances in its system. The brain becomes dependent on them and believes it needs them to function.

When you decide you want to stop using the drug, your body will start to detox. The detoxification, or detox, process is associated with both mental and physical withdrawal symptoms as your body eliminates the substance and its harmful toxins from your system.

Medical detox is an opportunity to undergo withdrawal in a safer and more comfortable environment. It involves being cared for and monitored 24/7 by our medical staff and can include medication-assisted treatment (MAT), which uses certain prescription medications to help your body wean off of addictive substances and reduce discomfort.

At SOBA New Jersey, we offer medical detox for a range of addictive and harmful substances, including but not limited to:

What Are the Benefits of Medical Detox?

When you are under the care of medical professionals while detoxing, you are less likely to relapse. Having the care and support of addiction specialists who know how to minimize withdrawal symptoms can help immensely in the process. You also have less risk of serious complications, including harmful health issues, life-threatening problems, and overdose associated with relapse.

Plenty of people struggling with substance abuse and alcoholism do not realize how severe withdrawal symptoms can be. If they try to detox at home by themselves, they could experience dangerous symptoms like delirium tremens, seizures, suicidal ideation, or hallucinations. However, at a medical detox center, these individuals are closely monitored and can receive medications that can help prevent or ease such symptoms.

Some of the additional benefits of a medical detox include:

  • Having the time to retreat from daily life, habits, and patterns to solely focus on recovery without distractions
  • Direct, 24-hour access to addiction recovery experts
  • Professional support and encouragement in a comfortable, safe facility

Medical detox allows you to rest, repair yourself and your relationships, and begin building a solid foundation for continued recovery.

What Happens During Medical Detox?

Addiction affects everyone differently. Before entering our detox program, you will undergo an evaluation with one of our professional and compassionate intake specialists. During this initial assessment, we will ask for information regarding your history of substance abuse, your personal health history, the type of substance you are using, how frequently you are using it, what dosage you typically take, and more. We will also assess your vital signs, such as your blood pressure, and check for dehydration and signs of alcohol or drugs in your urine.

It is important that you are as honest as possible during your initial evaluation. The more information you provide to us, the better able we will be to create a personalized treatment and recovery program for you. Your recovery program should address your specific situation, as well as your unique needs.

Following this initial evaluation, you will enter our residential detox program. You will spend all of your time at our facility, where you can receive the around-the-clock care and support you need as you withdraw from alcohol or drugs. The withdrawal process is different for everyone and also depends on the type of substance you are using, but it typically lasts anywhere from several days to a few weeks. Most often, withdrawal symptoms peak during the first couple of days before eventually tapering off and becoming less intense in the following weeks. To learn more about what to expect with alcohol or cocaine withdrawal, visit our Alcohol Detox and Cocaine Detox pages.

Once you have completed the actual detoxification process and the substance is no longer in your system, the next step in recovery is entering a residential rehab or outpatient program.

Medical detox is just the first step in your recovery; if you complete detox but do not continue treatment, you are much more likely to relapse. However, when you actively participate in ongoing substance abuse treatment, you are much more likely to break the cycle of addiction and go on to lead a healthy, full, and sober life.

If you are not sure whether your insurance covers detox programs, we can help you out! How old do I have to be to start your detox program?

SOBA New Jersey’s detox program only accepts adults 18 years of age and older. We do not treat adolescents.

How long does medical detox take?

Most often, medical detox takes between three to seven days for the physical withdrawal symptoms to stop. However, the emotional withdrawal symptoms—such as cravings, anxiety, or mood swings—may linger for weeks or even months. The time it takes for the body to detox varies from person to person, depending on factors like the type of substance used, the frequency of use, the individual’s age, their addiction history, and more.

Should I detox at home?

Trying to get through withdrawal on your own at home can be extremely challenging and, in some cases, dangerous. Depending on the substance, you could put yourself in danger of severe withdrawal symptoms like seizures, tremors, or death. Our inpatient medical detox center has around-the-clock staff that monitors and ensures safety when it comes to getting through the withdrawal process. Trained doctors and nurses monitor your vitals and check your progress each day. Depending on the severity of the withdrawal symptoms, they may prescribe comfort medications to help minimize your discomfort. If you’re unsure whether or not you should detox at home or in a medically supervised setting, you can contact our helpful staff for help.
