Medical detoxification or just ‘detox’ is a specific treatment used when someone has a severe addiction or is addicted to a highly dangerous substance. Essex County and the rest of New Jersey are struggling with substance abuse and overdose risks. Fortunately, suspected overdose deaths dropped to 182 during the first half of 2024, marking a 21% decrease from the 230 deaths reported during the same period in 2023.[1] This decline mirrors a broader 26% reduction in overdose fatalities in the same timeframe across the state.[2]

However, the work isn’t done. Essex County still reported more suspected overdose deaths than any other county in New Jersey in early 2024. Local law enforcement, EMS, and healthcare partners responded with harm reduction efforts and administered naloxone 2,837 times through public programs.[3] Some of the other harm reduction initiatives include community outreach and COOP programs that allow residents to obtain naloxone kits and training.[4]

Still, state healthcare providers issued over 1.5 million opioid prescriptions in the beginning of 2024.[5] Essex County accounted for a significant share with 212,902 prescriptions dispensed, placing it among the top counties for opioid distribution.[6] In addition to prescription opioids, substances like fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, benzodiazepines, and other drugs continue to drive addiction concerns.

Between 2018 and 2021, 14.8% of adults in New Jersey reported binge or heavy drinking, ranking the state among the highest nationwide for alcohol abuse.[7] In Essex County, the issue is even more of a concern, with 15.8% of adults engaging in binge drinking, surpassing the statewide average.[8] Essex County has put forth efforts to increase access to inpatient and outpatient addiction treatment options and prevention resources, including Fairfield drug rehab centers and detox.
