Types of AmeriHealth Plans

A quick overview of HMO, EPO, PPO, and other plan features

AmeriHealth features several different types of health insurance plans. Your coverage may be set up as an HMO, EPO, or PPO. Each works a little differently, especially around networks and referrals.

If your plan is an HMO, you usually pay a lower monthly premium, but you will need to:

Designate a specific doctor as your primary care physician (PCP)
Seek referrals from your PCP before you see a specialist
Stay within the provider network when seeking treatment unless you experience an emergency

EPO plans are similar to HMOs in that they typically require you to stay in network. The difference between them is that for an EPO, you usually don’t need:

A designated PCP
Referrals to see specialists

A PPO plan gives you more flexibility to see providers outside the network, though in-network care typically costs less.

Some AmeriHealth plans may also include a Health Savings Account (HSA), which lets you set aside pre-tax money for medical expenses. In certain cases, members may have a catastrophic plan, designed to help with major, unexpected health costs.

AmeriHealth’s Available Networks

AmeriHealth offers two provider networks in New Jersey: the Regional Preferred network and the Local Value network. Each network has its own:

Participating hospitals and other facilities
Participating doctors
Geographic service area

The Regional Preferred network is the larger of the two, which usually means more in-network options. The Local Value network is smaller, but it may come with lower out-of-pocket costs for certain services.

AmeriHealth’s Coverage for Drug and Alcohol Treatment

Today, many health insurance plans help cover treatment for substance use. This support is usually provided through behavioral health benefits, which also include care for mental health conditions not related to substance use. That structure reflects the fact that addiction is diagnosed as a substance use disorder (SUD), and that people dealing with SUD often benefit from support for co-occurring mental health concerns as well.

AmeriHealth includes behavioral health coverage as part of its plans and follows a whole-person approach to care. In practice, that means coverage is designed to support both physical recovery and mental well-being throughout treatment.

AmeriHealth includes SOBA New Jersey in its provider network and offers added support for members, including:

Customer care advocates who help you find care that fits your needs
Case managers who support you throughout the recovery process

AmeriHealth also offers telehealth options, so you can stay connected with providers and access tools that support your recovery.

We provide free transportation services for clients within a 5-hour distance of our New Brunswick, NJ rehab facilities. This service is for individuals in need of drug or alcohol detox that are unable to find transportation to our facility. This service includes transportation from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.
