Substance Abuse Among LGBTQIA+ People

According to the National Institution on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Survey on Drug Use and Health from 2020, substance abuse patterns among LGBTQIA+ adults were distinctly different from cisgender-heterosexual (cishet) adults. This data suggests that LGBTQIA+ people can react differently to addiction triggers and situations that can begin addiction.

Keynotes of the NIDA study include:

Marijuana abuse41.3% of LGBTQIA+ people use marijuana, frequently or infrequently, compared to just 18.7% of the general adult population.

Opioid abuse6.7% of LBGTQIA+ people admitted to abusing opioids compared to just 3.6% of the general adult population.

Alcohol abuse: 21.8% of LGBTQIA+ people suffered from alcohol use disorder compared to 11% of the general adult population.

A separate study recognized by NIDA found that LGBTQIA+ people were more likely to smoke or use e-cigarettes (vaping devices) compared to cishet people. Furthermore, NIDA has acknowledged that addiction recovery programs that are specifically designed for LGBTQIA+ people are more effective, yet less than 8% of rehab centers offer such a program. SOBA New Jersey is proud to be at the forefront of this new specialized type of rehab program.

Addiction Risk Factors for LGBTQIA+ People

Everyone has unique substance addiction triggers. However, many people are triggered or placed at risk of substance addiction due to overwhelming external stressors. In this way, members of the LGBTQIA+ community can be at a higher risk of substance addiction and abuse because they are more likely to face social stigma, workplace discrimination, and harassment or violence in their day-to-day lives than cishet people.

Personalized Treatment Plans from SOBA New Jersey

Modern Facilities Crafted for Modern Recovery

At SOBA New Jersey, we have many substance addiction treatment options available to help LGBTQIA+ people overcome drug addiction. We are known for our customizable treatment plans that acknowledge the addiction issues unique to you, which could include many triggers that are mostly unique to LGBTQIA+ people.

Four types of drug addiction treatments that can be effective are:

Short-term residential care: This type of treatment involves living in a rehab center for a period that usually lasts several weeks. This can be a good option for those who need intensive support and a safe, drug-free environment to recover.

Long-term residential care: Long-term residential treatment typically lasts for six months or longer. It provides ongoing care and support for recovery from severe addictions.

Outpatient programs: Outpatient treatment involves regularly visiting a rehab center for therapy and support while continuing to live at home. This is a good option for those who need flexible treatment that accommodates their work, education, or personal schedules.

Telehealth programs: LGBTQIA+ individuals may face barriers to accessing in-person treatment, such as stigma or discrimination. Telehealth programs, which use technology to connect patients with therapists and support groups remotely, can be a helpful solution.

At our substance addiction rehab center in New Jersey, we offer tailored programs that address the unique needs of LGBTQIA+ individuals. Our team of compassionate professionals provides clients with a safe, supportive environment while offering a range of treatment options to address addiction holistically.

Real Stories. Real Recovery.

Benefits of Substance Abuse Treatments

We are Standing By Ready to Help

Seeking professional help for substance abuse is an important step toward recovery. LGBTQIA+ people who face unique challenges as a result of discrimination and other societal pressures may find it even more critical to receive professional care. SOBA New Jersey focuses on the specific needs of LGBTQIA+ people to promote a sense of safety and acceptance, helping individuals to address the root causes of their addiction.

Four benefits of receiving substance abuse treatment include:

In a rehab center that caters to the LGBTQIA+ community, you can receive support from staff and peers who understand your challenges and expectations. This supportive environment can encourage you to open up and feel more comfortable seeking help.

Dual diagnosis options: Many LGBTQIA+ people who struggle with substance addiction have received diagnoses for mental health difficulties. At our rehab center, you can utilize a dual diagnosis recovery program that acknowledges both issues at once.

LGBTQIA+ people who receive substance abuse treatment can learn about addiction, its effects on mental and physical health, and effective coping strategies for a successful recovery journey.

Receiving substance abuse treatment helps individuals to develop the skills and knowledge needed to maintain a drug-free lifestyle over the long term. Individuals who receive professional care for addiction have a much higher chance of achieving lasting recovery.
