Implementing Spiritual Principles For a Lasting Recovery
Implementing Spiritual Principles For a Lasting Recovery
What Is SuperHealth and How Does it Work?
SuperHealth is a yogic science applied to alcohol and substance use disorders designed to help patients break problematic habits and harmful cycles. This method was created by Yogi Bhajan, a yoga guru, Master of Kundalini, and spiritual leader.
When he traveled to the U.S., he found his peers escaping the emptiness of life and numbing themselves from inner unhappiness and stress with drugs, pills, and alcohol. By blending Eastern principles of spiritual fulfillment and yoga with Western addiction medicine, he created a new path to recovery success that positively impacts every area of life. Today, the official SuperHealth entity is a Non-Governmental Organization that consults for the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.
The framework of SuperHealth combines the core principles of Kundalini Yoga, meditation, breathwork, nutritional guidance, and dietary support formulas, true to all the foundational techniques taught by Yogi Bhajan. When used alongside evidence-based addiction treatment, yoga-based practices may help reduce cravings and stress, support emotional regulation, and strengthen recovery skills.[1]
Our SuperHealth Recovery Program
Eliminating alcohol or substance use from daily activities leaves a whole lot of time in your day and patterns in your life that you formerly fell back on. By implementing new healthy coping skills and beneficial habits, you can fill that time and find fulfillment in a meaningful exercise.
At Soba NJ, our SuperHealth recovery sessions integrate mindfulness and movement into the treatment process. As a group, participants undergo physical motions and mental training to engage different parts of the brain, cultivate healthy coping skills, attune to a higher level of consciousness, connect on a deeper level with others, and support one another in their recovery.
Regardless of your or your loved one’s level of familiarity with yoga, breathwork, or meditation principles, our leaders and yogis help participants at all levels learn and improve these skills throughout treatment.
How Our Team Can Help
What Does a SuperHealth Session Look Like?
The philosophy of the SuperHealth approach is to empower you to unlock your highest potential and uncover your True Self. Empowered with the tools to achieve this, you can overcome the mental, physical, and spiritual blocks holding you back from being the best version of yourself and your life. The components of a SuperHealth session incorporate some or all of the following:
- Kundalini Yoga & Meditation: Also known as the “yoga of awareness,” Kundalini helps you achieve mental clarity, enhance physical wellness, and cultivate greater awareness of your inner self.
- Breathwork Techniques: This is a conscious method that involves changing the rhythm and cadence of your breathing to release stress, reduce emotional reactivity, regulate mood, physically and mentally relax, alleviate pain, and develop greater self-control.
- Sound & Mantra: Mantras blend Kundalini Yoga movement with breathwork to shift your energy and reorient thoughts, memories, and mindset.
- Restorative Nutrition: Food can be both enjoyable and nourishing, but it can also be a powerful medicine. Our nutrition guidance will promote common foods that purify, balance, and detoxify your body, helping it reach a natural, positive state.
- Humanology: Humanology is a philosophical approach to recovery that “identifies the physiological, psychological, sociological, and spiritual causes of addictions” and other harmful patterns or behaviors.
- Counseling: SuperHealth yogis and practitioners will guide you through every session and equip you on a personal level to safely navigate the challenges associated with addiction, recovery, and life.
Are SuperHealth Yoga Interventions Effective?
The benefits of yoga in recovery have been consistently confirmed. Research suggests yoga can be a helpful addition to evidence-based addiction treatment. Studies have found improvements in anxiety, pain, and some substance-use outcomes when yoga is included alongside standard care.[2]
SuperHealth goes deeper than simply adding yoga to recovery. By incorporating breathwork, meditation, mantras, nutrition, and other complementary practices, the recovery experience becomes more immersive and successful. Yogi Bhajan himself began implementing these methods with two individuals who struggled with heroin addiction and saw their transformative results firsthand.
Inspired by SuperHealth’s initial success, formal treatment centers began to implement his methods, which eventually led to the development of a new program accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and receiving the highest commendations.
