Sober Activities In New Jersey
Eat Breakfast at a Classic NJ Diner
No New Jersey experience is complete without a stop to a classic diner. New Jersey boasts over 600 diners in its scant 7350 square miles, which equates to about one diner for every 12 square miles.
That’s an ironic number because if you ate at a different New Jersey diner every Saturday for the entire year, it would take about 12 years to eat at all of them. Some diners, such as the Tick Tock Diner, are bright neon and chrome time capsules of the 1940s, while others blend in more with their neighborhood.
If nostalgia is your thing, add New Jersey’s diners to your sober living itinerary.
Bonus: You can gripe about the traffic with your waiter or waitress and feel like a local.
Marvel at the Liberty Science Center
The Liberty Science Center (LSC) is the crown jewel of Garden State STEM. Large science, technology, engineering, and mathematics exhibitions attract up to 750,000 visitors each year to the LSC.
Exhibitions can run the gamut from the science behind film animation to habitats in the ocean. There is programming for everyone from the littlest scientists (under 41” in height) to high school students and beyond.
There’s even a massive 1700 square-foot replica 1950s train set with 5 separate trains moving along the tracks simultaneously.
Take a Cranberry Hike
In South-Central New Jersey, near the unincorporated community of Chatsworth is the Franklin Parker Reserve Trail. It’s a beautiful hike through old cranberry bogs and blueberry fields that makes you feel like you are miles away from civilization.
Doing the whole loop will take about 1.5 hours, so ensure you are physically capable of sustained activity in your new sober lifestyle before attempting.
Bonus: Take selfies in the MASSIVE Adirondack chairs by the trail.
Take a Stroll Down the Longest Boardwalk in the World
Atlantic City’s magnificent boardwalk stretches for 4 miles along the Atlantic Ocean, with an additional 1.8 miles into neighboring Ventnor City. You can smell the saltwater and sugary goods from the vendors lining the boardwalk. That combination may be responsible for why saltwater taffy was invented there!
Atlantic City was also the inspiration for all the place names in the board game Monopoly. The facade of the shops isn’t significantly different since the boardwalk gained popularity in the 1870s, so you’ll surely enjoy a nostalgic trip down memory lane.
Bonus: Ride bikes down the boardwalk to finish everything in one day.
New Jersey Festival of Ballooning
Sometimes, it’s hard to think of having a magical experience as an adult. But something magical happens every year at the state’s Festival of Ballooning.
Experience over 100 hot air balloons firing their burners in the early morning, creating a kaleidoscope of light, shimmering through the material like gigantic Chinese lanterns. The festival began in 1983 and has been hailed as one of the best things to experience in New Jersey by people and publications alike.
Bonus: Look hard enough, and you might see an 86 ft. tall Darth Yader and 62 ft. tall Yoda duke it out in the skies overhead.
Stroll Through Princeton University’s Campus
If you’re an avid student of early American folklore, a walk through Princeton University’s campus will be like a leisurely jaunt through the glen of history.
Legend has it that future Founding Father but then-artillery captain Alexander Hamilton shot a cannonball through the south wall of Nassau Hall, through a portrait of King George at the Hessian and British troops stationed there. We can neither confirm nor deny this, but there is a cannon from that time period buried in the ground with only the top end protruding.
The nascent Continental Congress occupied the same hall in 1783, and today, it houses the University’s President and other administrative offices.
Bonus: See if you can find the still-visible scar from the cannonball on the south wall of Nassau Hall.
Tour Luna Parc
Home of visionary artist Ricky Boscarino since 1982, this semi-private/public museum is actually still his year-round residence.
But, this residence opens to the public twice a year for a 3-day open house weekend. His materials of choice are metal, glass, clay, wood, and cement. His style is whimsical.
You’ll need to reserve tickets as far in advance as possible to get a chance to go.
Smash the Jersey Lighthouse Challenge
Sometimes, accepting a challenge-based mission makes spending the weekend without drinking much more manageable.
The “New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge” occurs each October and involves visiting 10 land-based lighthouses, 3 lifesaving stations, 1 museum, and 1 virtual site over the course of a 2-day weekend. It’s a formidable challenge, to be sure.
You’ll need to cover much ground between Sandy Hook and Paulsboro to make it happen. Even if you don’t manage it, you’ll get the chance to appreciate a lot of maritime history just the same. There is a small registration fee, but this helps pay for the upkeep of these historical treasures.
Bonus: Run the steps and throw your fists up in the air to the “Rocky” theme song when you get to the stop.
Get a Pork Roll Sandwich
Question: Is it Taylor Ham, or is it Pork Roll?
Better Question: If it tastes good, does it even matter? One of the longest-running regional debates in New Jersey is the proper name to call the pork, egg, and cheese sandwich you get at the corner deli.
Violence is never the answer, but agreeing that this sandwich is the best and most iconic food in New Jersey might be enough to patch things up with the locals.
Bonus: Grab the Pork Roll at Beach Shack in Point Pleasant – champion of the 2023 Pork Roll Playoff Bracket.
Yoga in the Park
Many different parks in New Jersey offer free community yoga classes on Saturday mornings with suggested donations.
During your transition to sober living, it’s great to strengthen the connection between your mind and body. Yoga helps you maintain a state of mindfulness, which means awareness of what is going on inside you and around you at the same time.
One such class is Meraki Yogini, which takes place near Jersey City on Saturdays and Sundays from May through October.
Bonus: Bring your mat, towel, blanket, and water.
Investigate Paranormal Activity
In 2022, New Jersey was named the most haunted state in the nation. According to the report, approximately 30% of its houses are likely to be haunted.
As such, paranormal investigation groups abound. Many groups allow novices to join them on their quests to investigate the supernatural. While you may catch something on camera, most of the time, it’s pretty low-key.
Bonus: Be sure to play the Ghostbusters soundtrack on repeat (no matter how many times you’re asked to turn it off) as you drive to the haunted destination with the team.
Fly High in the NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum
This hangar has the bona fides of being a real WWII aviation hangar.
Inside are vintage planes and cars that date back to the early decades of the 20th century. There are helicopters and even a complete engine from a Boeing 777 jet. If loud engines that scream are your thing, then this is your place.
You can purchase tickets online to visit.
Bonus: Check out the vintage memorabilia like the old Coke machines!
Drive Down Highway 9 Belting Out Springsteen Music
Bruce Springsteen is the unofficial patron saint of New Jersey.
Although New Jersey has a proud musical lineage going back to Frank Sinatra, Bon Jovi, and Whitney Houston, just to name a few, none of the musicians were so heavily identified with the Garden State as Bruce Springsteen.
His first three albums are time capsules of 1970s Asbury Park at its finest. You can enjoy visiting several places he sings about, such as Madame Marie’s and Highway 9.
Bonus: Drive down Highway 9 in a CONVERTIBLE.
Visit Lucy the Elephant
Where else can you find a 150-year-old, six-story wooden elephant that used to be a hotel but is now a tourist attraction? Where else but New Jersey?
While Lucy now enjoys the same “National Historic Landmark” status as Independence Hall and the Alamo, her past wasn’t always so squeaky clean. She was a tavern and speakeasy in the early 1900s, but now she operates as a museum.
You can find the visiting hours and buy tickets online at their website.

Frequently Asked Questions About Not Drinking in New Jersey
Where Can I Socialize Without Alcohol?
There are plenty of places to socialize without alcohol, like parks or libraries, but sometimes we appreciate being inside, but also the ability to buy something to eat/drink.
Zero-proof bars are beginning to sprout in New Jersey and the United States. These places don’t serve any alcohol but still make beverages available for purchase.
What Can You Do at a Bar Without Drinking?
Know your limitations. Don’t go to a bar unless you are sure you are strong enough to remain sober while you are there.
Communicate with your friends who are going with you about what your expectations and boundaries are. It is inappropriate for them to wear down any boundaries you may have.
If you believe you are strong enough and decide to go to a bar, choose one with plenty of good food. Sit down at a booth away from the counter. Drive yourself.
What Can I Replace Alcohol with at Night?
Chamomile tea or tart cherry juice both have a sedative effect on your body and actually help your body get to sleep faster.
Alcohol might make you feel drowsy, but it actually disrupts healthy sleep patterns. Swapping alcohol for something else should actually IMPROVE your sleep.
