TRICARE Coverage Basics

A quick overview of how TRICARE works and the plans available

TRICARE is a unique approach to health insurance. Its services are provided, in part, by the Military Health System. Alongside the Military Health System, TRICARE also partners with a wide network of civilian facilities that are not affiliated with the military. Because of this combined network, anyone who qualifies for TRICARE coverage can receive care through:

Who Qualifies for TRICARE Coverage?

TRICARE coverage is available to many members of the military community. You or your family may qualify if you fall into one of the groups below:

Service members currently on active duty
The immediate families of these active-duty personnel
Personnel who have retired from military service, as well as their immediate families
National Guard members
The immediate families of those serving in the National Guard
Reservists and their families
Ex-wives and ex-husbands of a select number of military personnel
Spouses and families of those who died while in the military
Members of the military awarded the Medal of Honor
The families of those awarded the Medal of Honor

TRICARE Regions and Coverage in New Jersey

TRICARE serves members across the U.S. and overseas through a large, organized network. To keep coverage consistent, TRICARE is divided into regions, and each region works with a specific civilian partner to manage benefits and provider access.

New Jersey is part of TRICARE East. This region is administered by Humana Military, which helps manage coverage, referrals, and in-network provider services for eligible members in this area.

Treatment Services at SOBA New Jersey

People with drug or alcohol SUDs are affected by at least one of two problems. The first of these problems is clinical addiction marked by physical dependence and compulsive substance use. The second is a pattern of substance abuse that limits your ability to function without causing addiction. Both of these issues are rooted in significant changes in your mental well-being. For this reason, all SUDs qualify as mental health disorders.

There are well-developed rehab services for SUD recovery. Main examples of the available options include:

Substance detoxification, i.e., medical detox
Psychotherapy
Medication
Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) that combines therapy and medication

You may go through rehab in an inpatient or residential program. Conversely, you may join any of three types of outpatient programs for people with SUDs.

No matter your specific plan, your TRICARE coverage will help you pay for these kinds of services. It will also help you pay for any other form of mental health treatment. This is important to know, given the high rate of overlap between SUDs and other mental health issues.

How TRICARE Coverage Affects Your Cost

How much of your treatment costs will be covered by TRICARE? That depends on two important factors:

Your military status or relationship to someone who is covered (active duty, retiree, dependent, etc.)
The specific TRICARE plan you have

TRICARE may cover a large portion of treatment costs, but coverage levels differ from plan to plan. Some members pay little out of pocket, while others may have cost-sharing or copays.

SOBA New Jersey’s Slate of Rehab Services

At SOBA, we feature a range of rehab options typically covered by TRICARE insurance plans.

Depending on your situation, the most important options for you or your loved one may include:

Supervised medical detox
Therapy and/or medication-based treatment for SUDs
Dual diagnosis treatment for additional mental health issues

You may receive these services in any of our three outpatient programs. You may also receive them as part of short- or long-term residential care.

Courtesy Client Pick-Up Within 5 Hours of Our Location

We provide free transportation services for clients within a 5-hour distance of our New Brunswick, NJ rehab facilities. This service is for individuals in need of drug or alcohol detox that are unable to find transportation to our facility. This service includes transportation from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.
